Mental health problems in deaf and severely hard of hearing children and adolescents

The rate of mental health problems in deaf and severely hard of hearing children and young people is increased compared to the rate in the general population, according to most studies. Many hearing-loss related, environmental and psychological factors have been associated with the risk for developing mental health problems among deaf and severely hard of hearing youth. In this lecture both epidemiology and factors that may underlie or contribute to mental health problems will be addressed, with special attention to the putative influence of self-esteem and socio- cognitive maturity. Clinical implications will be highlighted.
